DAS RACIST PRESENTS…. A FUNKY REGGAE HOUSE PARTY

@ HIDMO ERITREAN CUISINE
2000 S JACKSON ST
SEATTLE, WA

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15
(that’s tonight)

9 PM – LATE
ALL AGES
$5

Well, they’re back. After a super-sold out night at Chop Suey last Friday, your favorite mumbling intellect-rap post-hype Brooklyn BFFs are back in Seattle this evening. Tonight, they’ll partner with Last Night’s Mixtape and be spinning reggae & whatever else all night long for the citizens of Seattle to get down.

What exactly does it mean when Das Racist hosts a funky reggae house party? We’re not quite sure. There may be rapping, there may be singing, and there will probably be whining.

We asked them what to expect, and they just looked at us like this: http://dasracist.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/DR1.gif

Delicious Eritrean cuisine and dranks will absolutely be available for purchase.

Das Racist loves Seattle. They want to hang out with you. Won’t you come through?

Immigrant Resource Fair This Saturday

OneAmerica is having an Immigrant Resource Fair this Saturday.  I want to make sure that people know that this is going on, especially in light of the fact that it is getting harder and harder for communities in need to access services right now.  This is a free and unique opportunity for immigrants and refugees to get valuable information as well as sign up for services on the spot.  The fair is open to anyone but is especially geared towards low-income immigrants and refugees living in the  city of Seattle. If you fit in this demographic or work in/with a community that does, please help me to spread the word.  If you are interested in volunteering at the fair, it is also not too late to sign up.

DETAILS:

OneAmerica and the Washington New Americans Program will hold a Resource Fair for immigrants and refugees through funding from the City of Seattle’s Human Services and a partnership with the Parks Department.  The primary focus of the event is to provide information on:

  • The benefits of citizenship
  • How to become a citizen
  • Where to go to receive assistance with citizenship
  • Information on how to access benefits and resources, such as child care, energy and utilities assistance, financial literacy, health care and services, senior services, tenants’ rights, etc.
  • How to participate in civic life

There will be workshops and panel discussions on these topics throughout the day and numerous community organizations and city representatives will have informational booths.

The Fair will be held at Garfield Community Center from 10:00am to 3:00pm on Saturday, November 13th. Interpretation and food will be provided to attendees.  The Fair will be FREE for all attendees.  If you are interested in attending and would like more information, please call (206) 452-8425.

For more information and if you are interested in volunteering or participating in the Fair, please contact Jennifer Chan at Jennifer@weareoneamerica.org.  Posters in multiple languages are available here.

Why I Vote

Filed under: Activism, Election 2010, OneAmerica Votes, Politics — rahwita @ 5:35 pm

2010 marks 45 yrs since the voting rights act of 1965 passed which outlawed discriminatory practices that had been keeping black people, among others, from voting. 2010 also marks 90 yrs since the 19th amendment was ratified giving women the right to vote in this country. These rights were not won easily.

I organize and I vote because I believe that we stand on the shoulders of those that came before us and because I want to create a better world for those coming after us. And no, voting is not the only way that I or anyone can create change or a better world, BUT all of us with the right to vote should not take for granted the power that comes with it.

On this election day I want to take a moment to honor those that believed, fought and won a better world for me 45 and 90 years ago. I want to express my deepest respect for everyone fighting today for a better world for those coming after me. I am also filled with love and pride for all the first time voters, first time canvassers and phone bankers that took the time to get involved this year. I know that some of you did so very reluctantly and some of you got involved not because you believed in the system but because you believed in me, Hidmo or OneAmerica Votes. Either way, you did it. You chipped away at the machine and you helped to mold a better world.

In Service and Solidarity,

Rahwa
